After a failed attempt to buy Viagra Super Force, the drugmaker announced in April it was stepping up its advertising campaign for the product, with plans to spend over $1 billion on marketing this year. The firm has had a successful product launch with Viagra Super Force, and sales of the drug have been on the rise.
“We have been very successful with this product. We have had some success with it,” said Dr. Marc Shays, the company’s president. “It’s a great product and we’re confident that it will be a success for many people.”
Shays’s comments come as the company is trying to cut advertising and marketing costs. The drugmaker has been trying to get customers to buy the product through an online pharmacy. The pharmacy chain will make it available for $10 for a 30-day supply, but can only sell 25-50% off in the first month, according to the company.
A total of 1.1 million people have purchased the erectile dysfunction drug, said Shays. Of those, 1.1 million had been on the drug, and $6.4 million had been spent on marketing.
The drugmaker plans to use the $1.1 billion spent on advertising this year to boost sales of the product and also expand sales to more of the US market.
A majority of those who have purchased the product have bought it through an online pharmacy. But the pharmacy has not made it available for $10 for a 30-day supply, but has paid a $25 per-pill fee for it, said Shays. “It’s a great product and it’s going to be great for people.”
“We’re not looking for a way to get the money we’re paying for the product, but we’re looking for a way to get people to buy the product.”
The move was not a surprise to Shays, who began taking Viagra from the drugmaker’s website when it was launched in March. “We know it’s a great product, and we’re confident it will be a success for many people,” she said.
“We’re very pleased with the efforts we’ve made to reach people who are looking for the product,” Shays said.
She said the company had also been trying to get customers to buy the product through an online pharmacy. She said they may have been trying to buy Viagra for five months, which would have been enough to get them to go to a pharmacy for a prescription.
The pharmacist said they did not know if the online pharmacy was offering Viagra or a generic version, so they would not know if they had any customer service contact, said Shays. “We were not sure if they had a customer service contact,” she said. “It’s a great product, and we hope to have a great product for people that are looking for this.”
